Changing mySQL root user password

It’s a pain in the nuts if you forget your mySQL root password. Here’s an easy way to reset it:

1) Stop any running mySQL deamons

2) Open a text editor and create a new file with the follownig line in it:

SET PASSWORD FOR ‘root’@'localhost’ = PASSWORD(‘<your new password>’);

3)  Run the mySQL deamon and use the –init-file flag to force mySQL to process the change password command:

mysqld_safe –init-file=<the file from step 2> &

You might need to sudo that mysqld_safe command.

7 easy steps to a more secure Wordpress blog

There are many things you can do to secure your wordpress blog – a lot of them are pretty technical are require programming and/or sysadmin knowledge. Here’s a list of easy things that YOU can do to secure your wordpress blog:

  1. Remove unused themes (by removing the whole directory)
  2. Disable and remove unused plugins.
  3. Keep your wordpress version up to date.
  4. Keep your used plugins up to date.
  5. Add an empty index.html file into the themes and plugins directories. This stop people from browsing to see what themes/plugins you have installed.
  6. Install the XSS-Me and SQLInject-Me Firefox plugins and run them against your site.
  7. Remove the XMLRPC.PHP file from the root directory of your blog if you are not using XML RPC.

Getting text width using iText

I love the iText library, love it. It’s so well written, it works, it’s fast. The codebase has been well thought out and exposes every piece of PDF functionality you could ever need.

As I’m back doing some stuff with iText for work I thought I’d post any code snippets that might be useful to other people.

First up, getting the text width of a string when it is rendered using a given font:

BaseFont font = BaseFont.createFont(BaseFont.TIMES_ROMAN, "Cp1252", false);
float stringWidth = font.getWidthPoint( "your string", 12 );

I’m using this to center a watermark vertically on the left hand side of each page. So I can work out where the text needs to go by subtracting the text width from the page height (width from height because the text is being shown vertically). Like so:

PdfContentByte under = stamper.getUnderContent( i );

under.beginText();
BaseFont font = BaseFont.createFont(BaseFont.TIMES_ROMAN, "Cp1252", false);
float watermarkWidth = font.getWidthPoint( "this is the watermark", 12 );
under.setFontAndSize( font, 12 );
float y = ( reader.getPageSize(1).getWidth() / 2 ) - watermarkWidth;
under.setTextMatrix(0, 1, -1, 0, 10, y );
under.showText( "this is the watermark" );
under.endText();

More iText goodness to follow!

Eye-catching photo album

I’m thinking it may be possible to modify this script to be used as a website logo. You cold grab the letters for the logo from Flickr and then display them using this script. Hovering around with the mouse would still spin the letters around. Clicking could either zoom them as it does already or could be links to other pages of your site.
